The Göksel Yılmaz Ensemble, surrounding Turkish-Arabic singer, guitarist and saz player Göksel Yılmaz, released their debut album Gezgin (The Traveller) independently on 1 December 2011. The album was first presented on World Music Day at the WMDC in Rotterdam and later, on 22 January 2012, to a sold out audience in Enschede.

Musical character

The ensemble’s playing is characterised by strong rhythmic power combined with a wide spectrum of sounds and instruments. Together with the almost mystical vocals, this creates an enchanting and immersive musical experience.

Concept and repertoire

The album Gezgin takes listeners on a musical journey through life, exploring themes of longing, rebellion, sadness, intense love and joy. Songs from Turkey, Lebanon and Azerbaijan accompany this journey. In addition, the album features seven original compositions by Yılmaz, drawing from traditional music as well as Western styles such as jazz, blues and classical.
