Met een akoestisch repertoire van Turkse, Arabische en Koerdische muziek, beïnvloed door westerse stijlen zoals jazz, blues en klassieke muziek, biedt het Göksel Yılmaz Ensemble een innovatieve weergave van de multi-etnische textuur van het Anatolische muzikale landschap. Deze diversiteit wordt versterkt door de internationale achtergrond van de vijf getalenteerde musici van het ensemble: Anne Bakker op viool (Nederland), Peter Rikkers op contrabas (Nederland), Jacobus Thiele (Duitsland) op percussie, Göksel Yılmaz, op `ud, saz, gitaar en zang (Nederland/Turkije), en zijn zus Funda Yılmaz op zang (Nederland/Turkije). Daarnaast treden ze soms op met gastmuzikanten uit Hongarije, Marokko, Syrie en Zambia.
Het ensemble staat bekend om hun eerlijke en toegankelijke benadering van traditionele muziek vol ritmische expressie en delicate gevoeligheid. Met hun optredens nodigen ze de luisteraar uit op een muzikale reis door het leven; van verlangen tot opstand, van diep verdriet en melancholie tot intense liefde en vreugde. Liederen uit Turkije, Syrië, Libanon leiden het publiek op deze reis. Op hun repertoire staan ook composities van Göksel Yılmaz, de oprichter en leider van het ensemble. Göksel werd geboren in Nederland, waar hij klassiek gitaar studeerde aan het conservatorium van Enschede. Hij bracht een deel van zijn jeugd door in Antakya, waar zijn ouders vandaan komen. Deze oude stad, vroeger bekend als Antiochië, ligt in een Arabisch sprekend gebied in Zuid-Turkije. Göksel groeide dus op in nauwe verbinding met de Nederlandse, Turkse en Arabische taal, cultuur en muziek.
Sinds de oprichting in 2006 heeft het ensemble twee albums uitgebracht en opgetreden op vele festivals, dansshows, muziektheaters en tv- en radioprogramma’s in Nederland, België, Turkije, Indonesië, Zwitserland, Duitsland en Cyprus. Ze speelden op grote festivals voor wereldmuziek, zoals de Music Meeting in Nijmegen en Dunya Festival in Rotterdam, maar ook in internationaal erkende concertzalen, zoals RASA in Utrecht en het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Hun debuutalbum “Gezgin” (De reiziger), dat voornamelijk in het Turks gezongen is, werd in 2011 in Nederland uitgebracht. Het tweede album, “Kan Zaman” (Er was een tijd, 2016), is volledig in het Arabisch. Deze compilatie is gebaseerd op oude cassettebandjes van zijn familieleden die traditionele Arabische liederen zingen. Met elegante arrangementen van Yilmaz is het album een eerbetoon aan de taal en muzikale cultuur van de Arabische minderheid in Turkije. Zoals Charlie Crooijmans, muziekrecensent van het Nederlandse tv-programma Vrije Geluiden, het zegt: “Het ensemble neemt de Arabische liedjes van de cassette en geeft er een eigen hedendaagse, maar nostalgische draai aan. Het is een prachtig pleidooi om meer samen te zingen.”
